This R1,6 billion apartment building will boast with a rooftop soccerfield

South Africa’s largest sectional-title developer JSE-listed Balwin Properties has announced its new Wedgewood development – an apartment high-rise in Sandton which offers a number of unique features including a five-a-side soccer field and outdoor cinema.

The R1.6 billion 20-storey development, the first high-rise development for the group, will officially begin apartment sales on 21 November, with the cost of a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment starting at R799,000.

Balwin, which is noted for developing sectional-title complexes and sprawling lifestyle estates like The Blyde in Pretoria, Polofields in Waterfall and Paardevlei in Cape Town, traditionally offers apartments in buildings between three and 10 storeys high.

Steve Brookes, Balwin's Cheif Executive, had told Moneyweb that Wedgewood aims to further the property group’s  aim to create more inclusive housing in the country.

Located just 200 meters from the Gautrain Sandton station, the development will boast a massive 1,340 units and will be home to predominately ‘micro apartments’ of between 33m2  (studio) to 55m2 (two-bedroom). However, Brookes prefers to call the units ‘lifestyle apartments’ considering the amenities Wedgewood Sandton will offer on-site.

“There will also be penthouse units available, so this is quite an inclusive development.… The smaller apartments will all have balconies too. It is going to be a ground-breaking development for Sandton,” he says.

Some of the key features of the apartments include:

  • Fibre and DStv ready;
  • Free SMEG appliances;
  • EDGE-certified green building;
  • 24-hour security with biometric access;
  • Prepaid meters for electricity and water;
  • Fully serviced cleaning and laundry facilities.

Some of the key features of the development include:

  • Concierge;
  • Coffee shop;
  • Business centre;
  • Kid’s play area;
  • Laundry service;
  • Outdoor cinema;
  • Training Science gym;
  • Lounge and chill zones;
  • Rooftop five-a-side soccer field.
