Architect Darryl Croome designed, well known for his timeless elegance and conscious approach to context has used an alternative building construction, commonly known as the Aruba system. Permanent formwork of modular expanded polystyrene blocks interlock, Lego like, with monolithic concrete infill cements the frame into place. This “insulated concrete form” construction affords balanced even temps throughout the day, perfect acoustic insulation and all round energy efficacy.
Central to the design is a courtyard which feeds the adjacent internal spaces with natural light, ventilation and views. The courtyard is pivotal to the layout, designed to transition all seasons. Glass sliding doors disappear entirely into concealed “pockets” creating a versatile indoor-outdoor flow. Similarly, the custom made steel shutters offer privacy, shade control and security.
This modern delight demonstrates a responsible approach to climate change and a move towards independence from the grid.
The green technology includes 6000 litre underground JoJo storage tanks (rain harvest fed); “cooler box” construction affording thermal insulation with further low energy requirements achieved with LED lighting, roof mounted PV panels, heat pumps and substantial battery back-up system.
