What makes Stellenbosch Central a great suburb?
The beautiful Stellenbosch central, roughly an hour from Cape Town, lies surrounded by the Stellenbosch Mountains in the Jonkershoek River Valley in one of the most picturesque settings in the Cape. Also called ‘Eikestad’ or city of oaks and its streets are lined with some of the most beautiful surviving examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture in the Cape. Dorp Street is a national monument and it’s worthwhile taking the time to walk around this cosy old part of Stellenbosch, with its secluded lanes, water furrows, cosmopolitan restaurants and coffee bistros, with superb views of mountain, vineyards and orchards. The name ‘Stellenbosch’ is almost synonymous with the wine industry. Not only does it have the oldest wine route in the country, and arguably the most famous, but the town has one of the most modern experimental wineries in the world. South Africa’s oldest music school, the famous Stellenbosch Conservatoire, has its home in this important cultural centre, and there is a collection of galleries and museums housing national and international art collections worth viewing.

Pringle Bay is situated in the Kogelberg Biosphere Nature Reserve, where the Unesco world heritage site protects the whole region from over development and densification. Although Pringle Bay in only an hour’s drive to the Cape Town International Airport, the inhabitants wants to keep the picturesque town safe and peaceful. With th is in mind there is only one entrance into Pringle Bay, which also serves as the exit. This entrance is fitted with security cameras linked to the security company, hence very little crime. The town faces north with a magnificent view over the bay towards Table Mountain. In mating season the whales come into the bay to give birth to their calves, which is an attraction on its own. With the current uncertainty in the economy and political arena, property prices are lower than owners would like which makes it a buyers market, however there is always a market for both. What makes Baardskeerdersbos a great suburb?
Baardskeerdersbos is a village located in a valley with an old-fashioned sense of space and still ruled by nature. Baardskeerdersbos will always rank as a small rural node with the historical role and function of an agricultural settlement and conservation center, surrounded by farms and nature reserves. Keeping the tranquil rural character intact is paramount for the inhabitants of Baardskeerdersbos.
The typical buyer
Baardskeerdersbos is an artist's village, hosting the bi-annual Baardskeerdersbos art route. The typical buyer embraces the easy-going atmosphere that comes with this and is either self-employed or (semi-) retired or simply looking for a second rural home.
Price overview
Baardskeerdersbos is a village which is still in transition after the tarring of the road from Gansbaai to Bredasdorp and prices can still fluctuate. A 3000 m² vacant stand with traditional water right will however sell for around R 600 to R 700'000 and a 150 m² cottage will sell between R 1,5 million and R 2 million.
Popular in this area
Baardskeerdersbos borders the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy including guest lodges such as Grootbos Nature Reserve and farm 215 - private nature reserve and Lomond Wine Estate. "Lokal" is a famous high quality pop-up restaurant in the main road of Baardskeerdersbos. On the road to the neighbouring heritage-village, is the Black Oyster Catcher Wine Estate and Brewery.
My tip
Several interesting small developments in tune with the rural and small-scale character of the village are planned, such as a coffee roastery and tasting room, a small guesthouse, fruityards and a nursery. It is expected that the village will change from the point of view of businesses it has on offer quite a bit in the coming 5 years. It is a small village and most people buy to keep their property for the long haul. Now is the time to become part of this tranquil rural haven.
