George at a glance

The bustling town of George lies in the fertile valley of the Outeniqua Mountains and enjoys some of the most breathtaking views of the Garden Route.

Once considered an industrial town, George has made over its image and is now one of the most visited towns in South Africa. What makes the town so attractive to tourists and residents alike is easy to see - not only does the town boast with stunning forest and ocean scenery, but it is also home to not one but three world-class golf courses. These courses include Fancourt, Kingswood, and Oubaai.

The history of the town can be traced back to the Khoi San settlement which once called the area home. The Khoi referred to this valley as Outeniqualand - which means the land of “milk and honey” - a fairly fitting description of the lush valley. In 1811, a settlement was formed and named George Town, after the reigning monarch of England at the time.

The town has always been a laid-back hamlet and although it has grown into a busy town, the residents still enjoy a slower pace in their free time. There are various activities to suit any needs you might have. From shopping to fishing, hiking and who can forget the world-class golfing?
